Category Historic

Bahadur Bande Fort, built by Hyder Ali and named for his title ‘Bahadur’. This hillfort, with its layered history involving Tipu Sultan, the Marathas, and the British, offers a glimpse into 18th-century military architecture and control.

This fort is located 4 km south of Koppal and is a hillfort built on a hill near the village. There are 5 inscriptions in the fort that tell about the construction of the fort. Sheikh Muhammad, the Killedar of Hyder Ali, built this fort in 1782 and named it after Hyder Ali’s title, ” Bahadur.” The fort was repaired and gates were built during the reign of Tipu Sultan (1783-84). In 1786, the Marathas and the Nizam of Hyderabad jointly captured this fort. In 1791, it was captured by British Captain Andrew Reed. The fort is built of square thick stones. Bricks and mortar are used here. There are gun enclosures and some cannon enclosures in the side walls of the fort. Inside the fort, there are five gates, ponds, a flagpole, guard rooms and temples of Chowdeshwari, Hanuman and Shiva.
