Sanapur Dam and Lake

Category Natural / Scenic beauty

Sanapur Village is situated about 16 km from Gangavathi on the Gangavathi-Munirabad road. The Tungabhadra River flows along the right side of the village. To the west of the village, adjacent to the river, lies the Balanjaneya Hill, atop which there is a small temple dedicated to Balanjaneya. On the left bank of the Sanapur Reservoir stands the Gangaparameshwari Temple. An inscription from 1899 CE found there reveals that the temple was constructed by Nandyala Narayana Raju, a trusted minister, as per the orders of Maharaja Shrirangadevaraya, based on the wishes of Queen Kuppammadevi of the Anegundi Kingdom. To the south of the temple, a dam built during the Vijayanagara era spans the river, known as the Sanapur Dam. A canal, named the Anegundi Canal, was constructed from this dam. This canal has provided irrigation facilities to villages like Sanapur, Virupapur Gadde, Hanumanahalli, Anegnudi, Ramadurga, Basavanadurga, Krishnapura, Sangapura and Singanagundu to this day. The canal system played a significant role in the irrigation infrastructure of the Vijayanagara period. It extends for about twelve miles and supplies water for agriculture to approximately 2,220 acres of land. To the right side of the village lies the ancient Sanapur Lake, which is connected to the left bank canal of the Tungabhadra. The lake is situated in a picturesque area surrounded by hills. The lake is located far from the dam and north of the village. The entire region, covered with scrub forests, serves as a habitat for various species of mammals, reptiles and birds. The natural beauty of the lake has made it a prominent tourist destination. A considerable number of domestic and international tourists visit this place to enjoy its scenic views.
