Shri Mahadev Temple in Itagi village of Koppal district’s Kukanur taluk is very famous. It is described as the emperor of temples in the inscription there. This temple was built in the Vesara style of the Kalyana Chalukya period. This shadaaga model temple attracts the eye with its exquisite carvings from the base to the top. Mahadeva, the commander (dandanayaka) of the sixth Vikramaditya of the Kalyana Chalukyas, built this Mahadev temple. The temple’s construction was completed in 1112 CE. The temple is built on a six-foot foundation. It is 120 feet long and 99 feet wide. The front hall, Navaranga, Nandimantapa, main gate, Rangasajjike, Makaratorana, and garbhagudi are built in stages and are very beautiful with fine carvings.
