Category Historic, Religious

Gavimath-one of the most significant Lingayat monasteries in the region. This center of worship, education, and social service is renowned for its tradition of ‘Trivida Dasoha’ and hosts the Gavimath Jatre, one of South India’s largest religious fairs.

Koppal, historically known as Kupana or Vidita Mahakopana Nagara, boasts a rich history and vibrant heritage. It has been inhabited since prehistoric times and holds significant mythological and religious importance. Koppal has served as a hub for the harmonious coexistence of Buddhism, Jainism, Hinduism, and Islam. In the history of Kannada literature and language, Koppal is renowned as a region of Tirulgannada (Pure Kannada). Koppal holds a sacred place in Jain history. The poet Ranna praised DanachintamaniAttimabbe’s purity, comparing it to the sanctity of Kopanachala, further highlighting Koppal’s prestige. The presence of two Ashokan inscriptions further elevates its historical significance. One of the most prominent religious centers in this historically rich region is Gavimath. Situated on a hill on the southern side of the city, Gavimath is one of the most significant Matha of the Lingayat tradition. It serves as a center for worship, education, culture, and social service, welcoming people from all castes and communities. The Matha upholds the tradition of Trivida Dasoha—spiritual, food, and educational service.

The Matha was established by Sri Rudramuni Mahaswami, who performed penance in a cave here and uplifted devotees. Since its founding, 17 revered pontiffs have led the Matha. The current 18th pontiff is Sri Abhinava Gavishiddeshwara Mahaswamiji. Among the notable leaders was Sri Gavishiddeshwara, the 11th pontiff, known for his deep spirituality, miraculous deeds, and divine presence. He became a revered Persnality among devotees in the Koppal region, spreading the fame of Gavimath far and wide. Following him, Sri Mariveerashanta Mahaswami and Sri Shivashantaveera Swami established the Sri Gavishiddeshwara Vidyavardhaka Sangha, under which they opened schools, colleges, and free food centers, initiating an educational revolution in the backward regions of Koppal. The present pontiff, Sri Abhinava Gavishiddeshwara Mahaswami, the 18th pontiff, is renowned for his vast knowledge, eloquence, educational vision, social concern, progressive outlook, and devotion to service. Under his leadership, the Matha has flourished both physically and spiritually. Educational initiatives have expanded, and the capacity of the student hostels has multiplied, offering opportunities for underprivileged students to pursue their studies. The Gavimath Jatre Mahotsava takes place annually on Pushya Bahula Bidige day and has grown into one of South India’s largest religious fairs. Millions of devotees participate, leading many to refer to the Koppal Jatre as the South Indian Kumbh Mela. Thus, Gavimath holds a revered place in the hearts of the people of this region, standing as a proud spiritual and cultural landmark of Koppal city.
